If the name James Ferguson doesn’t ring a bell, his phenomenal custom rifles probably do. Although Ferguson, a master gunsmith with a formal engineering background, builds custom rifles from .17 to .458 caliber, his specialties are a few pet cartridges that have raised the bar for extreme hunting rifles.

Reaching Hyper–Velocity is not just a matter of cramming more powder into a rifle cartridge; it’s about ultimate precision and tight tolerances that simply can’t be obtained in production rifles. All three of these rifles require custom handloading, which is included in Ferguson’s service to his clients. Before a rifle is shipped to a client, James will have worked up a custom load for that specific rifle that meets his criteria for pinpoint accuracy. Then he passes the reloading recipe on to the client so there is no experimentation required. The rifle is ready for the field in every sense.
A Word about Hyper Velocity
Three thousand feet per second has long been the definition of the threshold of “Magnum Velocity.” When Magnum Velocity is exceed by an addition 1,000 feet per second, you have what James Ferguson has coined as “Hyper Velocity.” That additional 1,000 fps creates such immense internal devastation on wild game that the normal effect is instant death as if struck by lightning. Legendary American gunsmith P.O. Ackley referred to it as “shock–down” power. A bullet driven to Hyper Velocity impacts an animal so violently that liquid (which cannot be compressed) and bone fragments are driven away from the point of impact like shrapnel. The devastation is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It must be seen to be truly understood.
